The power of words

Sometimes we underestimate the power of words. As Christians we shouldn't: didn't James warn about the tongue. As teachers in many ways we have an unequal relationship with our pupils. Sometimes that becomes a power struggle and when it comes to words we generally have the upper hand.

As a teacher in Further Education I've heard the story often enough. A pupil with dyslexia or simply struggling and in (sometimes understandable) frustration a teacher has misused the power of the tongue.

I remember when I was doing my teacher training I must have said something just a little too clever in class and a student piped up "the sarcasm lessons going well!". Unfortunately there is a danger that the job itself can be a sarcasm or cynism lesson.

"The tongue is a fire" let it be on fire for God, let it "admonish" certainly but let it build up and encourage too.

The damage done in seconds in the classroom can last a lifetime. Baz Gasgoyne's story is sadly far from unique: http://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/articles/life/Thick_As_Two_Short_Planks/33957/p1/

Email scam

Most of the Nigerian scams are obvious enough - if it seems to good to be true it probably is. The latest one is particularly nasty and could easily catch you out.

The email purports to be from a friend stuck in Africa while on an unannounced mercy mission. The email address is your friend's and if your friend is inclined to this sort of behaviour it may seem plausible.

The reality is their email account has been hacked and the password changed so they can't get in. Whoever has made it in will take full advantage of any email addresses they find.

One organisation that is currently on the lookout for electricians, carpenters, welders and plumbers is Operation Mobilisation. Its new ship Logos Hope, the replacement for Logos II, is nearing the end of its refit and OM are keen to hear from any volunteers with these skills to help finish the job.

A permanent book fair on the ship will offer visitors 8,000 different Christian and education titles. Logos Hope, which will be OM Ships’ largest vessel, is scheduled to visit the UK in early 2009. Crews on board OM Ships’ vessels are made up entirely of Christian volunteers, who help run the ship as it visits ports around the world. They also complete practical aid projects in ports and host teaching conferences for local Christians onboard.

OM Ships’ vessels – Logos, Logos II and Doulos - have brought the Gospel to port communities in more than 150 countries around the world and welcomed more than 37 million people to their book fairs. For more information visit:
